Internet Safety – watch out for fake Instagram pages

Recently there have been a number of fake Instagram accounts, particularly fake dancewear pages. This has made me concerned enough to write this blog. Young girls and boys are posting pictures on these pages and often commenting /begging to be chosen as their next Ambassador.

How to spot a fake Dancewear Instagram account:

  1. Do they have a link to a genuine website?
  2. Does the bio change often?
  3. Does the bio have things like….website up tomorrow (but it’s still not there after a few days)
  4. Did they request to follow you first and you’d never heard of them before?
  5. Is what they are offering too good to be true? This could be that the dancewear seems too cheap
  6. Do you have to order/pay by contacting them through DM?
  7. Are they looking for ambassadors when they don’t appear to have any actual products?
  8. Have they asked for your address or phone number so they can send you free dancewear?

What to do if you think an Instagram page might be fake:

  1. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR NAME, ADDRESS OR PHONE NUMBER.
  2. do not arrange to meet up with them, even if you think its for a photoshoot etc. Speak to an adult, show them the message and NEVER go to meet them without an adult.
  3. If they ask for your contact details, saying its to send you some free things, speak to an adult and request they send the items to a different address (a parents workplace would be a good choice, providing your parent says this is ok). A genuine company will not have a problem with this.
  4. If you get a DM which you feel uncomfortable about, or it makes you worried, show it to adult and block the sender.

Ask yourself….do you really want to be an Ambassador for something when you don’t know what that something is. You could end up working for someone who isn’t very nice, you could end up having to promote poor quality dancewear which you wouldn’t normally like to be seen in. You might get laughed at too!

Below are a few general internet safety tips:

  1. Don’t post any personal information online – like your address, email address or mobile number.
  2. Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself.  Once you’ve put  a picture of yourself online most people can see it and may be able to download it or screenshot it, it’s not just yours anymore.
  3. Keep your privacy settings as high as possible.
  4. Never give out your passwords.
  5. Don’t befriend people you don’t know.
  6. Don’t meet up with people you’ve met online.  Speak to your parent or carer about people suggesting you do.
  7. Remember that not everyone online is who they say they are.
  8. Think carefully about what you say before you post something online.
  9. Respect other people’s views, even if you don’t agree with someone else’s views doesn’t mean you need to be rude.
  10. If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried: leave the website, turn off your computer if you want to and tell a trusted adult immediately.

A simple guide to washing your dancewear to keep it looking great

Now you have your dream dancewear….here’s how to look after it to keep it and you looking amazing!!

This question gets asked so many times because on some dancewear brands washing instructions aren’t always clear. Below is a step by step guide to looking after your dancewear. If you look after your dancewear by following these instructions, your favourite dancewear will last and look great for longer.

Dancewear washing and care instructions

  1. HAND wash all dancewear in COLD water, using a small amount of washing detergent, hand wash powder is the best. You can use a bowl or a sink for this.
  2. Wash new items by themselves to check for colour run before washing with other items.
  3. Even if there is no colour run, wash similar colours together.
  4. Don’t leave your dancewear soaking in water, a quick wash is best.
  5. Next lightly squeeze the soapy water out of the dancewear.
  6. To get the detergent out of the items, put them (still individually or with similar colours, as above), in a bowl or sink of COLD water, move the water and items around a bit to release any detergent. I rinse dancewear twice to ensure all the detergent is removed.
  7. Lightly squeeze out the water from your dancewear. It is important to do this gently so that you do not stretch the fabric, damage the lace or any print on it.
  8. AIR DRY. You can do this either on a washing line or a clothing airer over a bath. Try and maintain the shape of the garment whilst drying it. It is important to ensure that the drying dancewear is not touching each other, colour run can still occur at this stage.

Fabrics to be most careful with:

  • Lace
  • Mesh
  • Sequin

These are often more delicate than lycra, so take extra care. Angel Dancewear puts a product care guide in all items that need EXTRA care. If you get one of these care notes, please read it and take the advice provided. We are always on hand to help you wash and care for your dancewear.

We hope you found this blog helpful. If you have any additional advice about caring for dancewear, please leave a comment below.

Spotlight on Pink Lemon Dancewear

Here at Angel Dancewear, we are really proud to be the exclusive UK and European suppliers and stockists of Pink Lemon Dancewear. Pink Lemon Dancewear is designed and manufactured in Australia where they make all the outfits themselves to ensure that all their dance clothes are made to a  really high quality.

Pink Lemon produce beautiful 2-piece dancewear sets, comprising of a top and shorts, and have a large range of different designs, colours and materials.

The hardest thing for us here at Angel Dancewear is deciding which of their styles and colours for us to stock because we just love them all. If you want to stand out from the crowd in your dance classes then Pink Lemon Dancewear is the way to do it.

We are even designing our own Angel Dancewear – Pink Lemon styles which will only ever be available in limited edition runs – no one wants to be in dance class where all the girls are wearing the same outfit!

Some of our first limited edition outfits are the Teal Sparkle,Teal 2-piece top and shorts from the new SPARKLE collection

the ApricotSparkle,Apricot 2-piece top and shorts from the new SPARKLE collection

and the Eve Navy SparkleLIMITED EDITION - EVE 2-piece top and shorts in NAVY from the new SPARKLE collection

There are so many beautiful colours and styles, sequins, lace. If you prefer a halter neck top, or more of a crop top – there are loads. The bottoms come in a shorts style or brief – there really is something to suit every dancers.

And as you would expect from Angel Dancewear – we also have matching heir bows made to really complete your overall look in dance class.

Sizing of dancewear can be difficult if you’ve not worn that brand before – all the dance wear brands size their clothing differently unfortunately.

You can rely on the Pink Lemon Dancewear size chart to help you choose the perfect size for you. You will probably already know your measurements, but if not get a measuring tape and then use the table below.

As a rough guide – the number in the size is the approximate girls age that its suitable for. But please check with your measurements as there no such thing as a standard 8, 10, 12 or 14 year old – or any other age. We’re all different.

Pink Lemon’s mantra is #BeTheDifferenceMakeADifference – a slogan founded on the concept that everyone of us can make a difference in the world. Things like honesty, politeness, kindness to a stranger, supporting the other competitors in dance competitions – all help us to make a difference in to the world we live in.

Be careful online

Here at Angel Dancewear we love social media – we use it all the time, everyday, to keep in touch with people who follow us, people we follow, and whats going on in the dance world.

We use social media ourselves to let people know whats going on with us and Team Angel Dancewear. We post when we get new dance clothing into the store, when we have sales and special offers, what our favorite dance wear of the moment is – and to let people know about events we and the Team are involved with or attending (like Move It, Can You Dance, dance competitions, etc)

social-media-marketing-image

We’ve noticed recently that a few new dance store sites have launched on social media – particularly Instagram. They’ve had a lot of interest as they have been searching for ambassadors, and talking about their stores will be coming soon. As part of the application for ambassadors they are dancers to tag them in photos, to direct message (dm) them and other similar stuff.

The ones we have seen have deleted their accounts after a few weeks -and were obviously fake.

We have no way of knowing why people are doing this – but we would like to remind all our followers of some basic internet and social media rules to stay safe online.

We’re not experts at this – but the below tips from Staying Safe Online seem like good guidance to us:

1)    Don’t post any personal information online like your address, email address or mobile number; or give it out in a DM unless you know it’s a real company and you know the reason they need it – ie to post out a prize in a competition.

2)    Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself.  Once you’ve put  a picture of yourself online most people can see it and may be able to download it, it’s not just yours anymore.

3)    Think carefully about interacting with dancewear brands, applying to be Ambassadors etc until you know it is a real company. If they don’t have a website they probably aren’t. Anyone can set up an Instagram account pretending to be a dancewear shop and get you to share your pictures with them. It could be kids having a laugh at your expense or weirdos.

4)    Keep your privacy settings as high as possible

5)    Never give out your passwords

6)    Don’t befriend people you don’t know

7)    Don’t meet up with people you’ve met online.  Speak to your parent or carer about people suggesting you do

8)    Remember that not everyone online is who they say they are. We know of a few dancers who have been fooled into believing they were brand ambassadors for companies which turned out to be fake.

9)    Think carefully about what you say before you post something online

10)   Respect other people’s views, even if you don’t agree with someone else’s views doesn’t mean you need to be rude

11)   If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried: show an adult or turn off your computer if you want to and tell a trusted adult immediately.

Angel Dancewear’s 1st birthday

Wow – where did the last year go? On Sunday 2nd October 2016 Angel Dancewear celebrated their first year in business.img_4820

Only one year has passed since we came up with the idea of bringing fashion dancewear brands like California Kisses to the UK from the USA and Pink Lemon Dancewear from Australia.

In just over a year we’ve gone from an initial idea whilst visiting the ALDC (Abby Lee Dance Company) in Los Angeles –  to owning a dancewear business which not only supplies to the UK, but also Ireland, Europe, America, Australia, any many more places.

We’ve attended many dance events in the UK such as Move It at London’s Excel and several Can You Dance events, and we even visited Los Angeles to meet our suppliers at Dancer Palooza – the largest dance event in the USA.

Whilst we have come a long way – we would be nothing without the support we have received from our customers. We therefore thought it was only right to invite a handful of Angel Dancewear customers, wearing their dance wear, to a photo shoot for our 1st Birthday party.img_4861img_4850 Unfortunately we couldn’t invite all of our customers – so picked a few names from our registered customers (sign up here) and asked people if they could join us. We were amazed and thrilled when people accepted, and welcomed customers from as far away as Surrey and Ireland to our event in West Yorkshire.

Team Angel

It was also a great opportunity to get together some member of the new ‘Team Angel‘ team who have been selected over the past few weeks from the many entries we received.  img_4902

We’re really looking forward to the coming year, and meeting more of our customers in person at Move It and Can You Dance in 2017.

Kalani Hilliker UK tour

Between the 19th and the 25th of August 2016, Angel Dancewear joined “Dance Moms” star Kalani Hilliker on her first ever visit to the UK.

Kalani was accompanied by “Dance Mom” Kira Girard, step-dad David Newman and little brother Jett.

The tour started in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. After Edinburgh, the tour moved into England and visited Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham and finally ended in London.

The format for each of the events was:

  • Kalani lead a dance warm up first to make sure all the dancers were fully stretched, followed by a dance workshop.img_4293
  • Once everyone was suitably worn out – Kalani took to the dance floor to perform her latest dance solo routine.
  • Kalani dance solo
  • Then there was a question and answer session, with Kalani answers questions from the audience about the Dance Moms TV show, dance class, training, and life in general.

Angel Dancewear supported the tour with logistics, event organisation and sound system. They also took their pop-up-shop selling the Kalani Collection dancewear range, in addition to Kalani’s own merchandise – which included limited edition UK tour t-shirts.

The Kalani Collection dancewear range has been designed by Kalani and is exclusively available in the UK and Europe from Angel Dancewear. It’s a range of dance clothing for girls and teens including dance tops, shorts, leggings, t-shirts and a dancing leotard.

A small number of limited edition Kalani UK tour t-shirts are available to purchase from our website, whilst stocks last.

Just before the London event started, Kalani also found time to took part in a live Q&A session on Facebook with Lifetime TV UK – filmed on location at the London venue.

In between the dance events, Angel Dancewear took Kalani and family on a whistle-stop sightseeing tour of the UK – including visiting plenty of castles! We also managed to take Kalani and family for a ‘cheeky Nando’s’ – which they all loved.

Summer 2016 – what a ride!!

Most people relax in the summer time, kick back, unwind, and wait until September to start work again.

Not the Angel Dancewear team!!

In early August we were out in Long Beach, Los Angeles, USA at Dancer Palooza meeting with our many amazing US based Dancewear suppliers. We were also there checking out the latest new styles to bring back to the UK and Europe for sale at Angel Dancewear

A few highlights were:

One of our favourite dance leotard brands, Company No.5, have changed their name to Five Dancewear. It was great to catch up with them and to see the latest new styles – check out their amazing SYDNEY leotard.

We also loved meeting up with Alison Stroming and club-five, and having the opportunity for a photoshoot with them by the amazing Dave Brewer.

Over at the Tilt Dancewear stand it was their multi-purpose rompers which were going down a storm. We’re looking forward to increasing our range of these great items in the near future.

Kalani Hilliker was over at the Purple Pixies stand with the Kalani Collection – see our upcoming post on the Kalani UK tour!

All in all, it was a great trip, with the opportunity to meet many of the Dance Moms stars. A few of our pictures are below-
